ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

Frank Castorf was artistic director of the Volksbühne am Rosa Luxemburg Platz in Berlin for 25 years. His radical approach to theatre influenced a generation of theatre directors. Together with the late designer Bert Neumann over a period of years, he developed a pioneering new theatrical aesthetic; with his actors, he put on existentialist performances with extreme physical demands. His stage adaptations, among others, of Dostoyevsky’s novels and short stories became legendary. Frank Castorf is also highly successful as an opera director, with productions including Wagner’s Ring cycle at the Bayreuth Festival.
