INFORMATION
The term raga is taken from Sanskrit and means “what dyes the spirit”. Ragas form the melodic basic structure of classical Indian music. Ragas are associated with specific times of the year and the day, and express basic moods such as joy, grief or love. A raga comes alive through the art of improvisation and ornamentation. Practitioners of classical Northern Indian music (Hindustani music) and classical Southern Indian music (Carnatic music) will perform ragas for the break of dawn and for sunrise.
