The designated Artistic Director of the Salzburg Festival, Alexander Pereira, has appointed Cecilia Bartoli Artistic Leader of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival starting in 2012. Every year, one opera will be produced by the Festival for Salzburg and performed at least twice on the Whitsun weekend. Around the opera, concerts will take place which expand the focus of the year. The main innovation is that the opera produced for Whitsun will also be featured on the summer program with the same cast.
The detailed program will be announced at a later date.

The Salzburg Festival finished the 2009 season with a total rate of 93% of seats sold. The Supervisory Board commended the courageous artistic and financial leadership of the Directorate, which defied the negative economic situation. The fact that the thought-inspiring opera program obviously touched a contemporary nerve was proven not only by the high demand for tickets even during the Festival itself. 37% of all bookings between March and August were made through the Salzburg Festival website alone.
