Opera 2016

( 5 Nov 2015 ) The 2016 opera programme includes three new productions, two revivals, one re-staging, one revival from the Salzburg Whitsun Festival and three operas performed in concert. The 2016 Festival opens with a world premiere by the British composer Thomas Adès. The Exterminating Angel is the title of an opera in two acts which will also be shown in London, Copenhagen and in New York in 2018, after its Salzburg premiere.

Drama 2016

( 5 Nov 2015 ) Three new productions, the revival of Jedermann, the staged melodrama Requiem für Ernst Jandl and two readings from works by Thomas Bernhard constitute the drama programme for 2016. The drama season opens at Salzburg’s Landestheater with Samuel Beckett’s Endgame – an apocalyptic comedy and tragedy at the same time, playing with the end, after the end and before the end.

Concerts 2016

( 5 Nov 2015 ) Four world religions – Judaism, Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism – were illuminated musically by the Ouverture spirituelle during the past four years. This year, our attention turns to sacred music of the churches of Eastern Christianity, which have developed a rich diversity of forms. The conviction that no instrument is better able than the human voice to adequately express the effect of the Holy Spirit manifests itself in sumptuous choral works, which are still performed from Africa to Asia.

Children’s and Youth Programme 2016

( 5 Nov 2015 ) The fact that Salzburg is occasionally a magical place can be experienced first-hand by our youngest guests, as they discover this year’s children’s opera The Fairy Queen, produced especially for the Salzburg Festival. The audience is taken on a journey into the magical world of Titania, Queen of the Fairies. The opera, lasting approximately 60 minutes, has been conceived based on motifs from William Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream and Henry Purcell’s The Fairy Queen.

The 2015 Salzburg Festival in Figures

( 30 Aug 2015 ) In order to present 188 performances, this summer the artists rehearsed for 220 days: 735 hours in the drama department, 1,320 hours for the opera productions and 551 hours in the concert department. The costume workshops produced 1,550 costumes. 7,000 invoices were processed by the administration; 1,500 light bulbs illuminated the stages and backstage areas. 48,000 kilograms of steel were used.

( 17 Aug 2015 ) Piotr Beczala made a dramatic entrance this year at the Salzburg Festival. His first aria in Jules Massenet’s Werther is so dramatic, says moderator Barbara Rett, that it would be the finale of any other opera. On the whole, this opera oscillates between dramatic outbursts and lyrical passages. “Absolutely,” tenor Piotr Beczala agrees. “I was worried beforehand whether the piece is suitable for a concert performance, because the story takes place mainly between the persons on stage.” He adds that he was overwhelmed by the reception the audience gave him.

( 13 Aug 2015 ) For Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier, their work directing Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride did not start on stage. Rather, they sat down at the piano in an intimate atmosphere and discussed note for note and word for word with the singers. “We want to delve into profound emotions and depict extreme tragedy,” says Patrice Caurier. Especially in Gluck’s case, this is essential – one syllable equals one note, that was the point of Gluck’s opera reform, says Moshe Leiser. “People were to attend operas in order to understand the text, not only to hear beautiful music,” he explains.

Guest Orchestras • To make a passion audible

( 4 Aug 2015 ) What was the most exotic or special location you have ever performed in?
The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) has appeared literally all over the world. For me personally one of the most exotic places for us was also the least exotic place for our Music Director.  We performed in a Cricket Club in Mumbai in the rain. The occasion was the 100th anniversary of Mehli Mehta's birth. The irony was that the people who had purchased the most expensive seats were the ones who were getting wet, although many of them had someone holding an umbrella over their heads throughout the concert! The soloist was Placido Domingo, and he got quite wet as well!

Festive Opening Ceremony of the 2015 Salzburg Festival

Last weekend, the traditional performance of Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, part of the Ouverture spirituelle, and the premiere of Jedermann launched the festival season. The opening ceremony of the Salzburg Festival takes place at the Felsenreitschule on July 26 at 11 am. The ceremony will be attended by the Austrian President Dr. Heinz Fischer, Landeshauptmann Dr. Wilfried Haslauer, the Austrian Minister of Art and Culture, Constitution and Media Dr. Josef Ostermayer and Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. How the Swarovski crystals find their way onto the Paramour’s dress

( 9 Jul 2015 ) Carefully, Nina Fahrbach picks up a sparkling crystal with her tweezers, heating it over a candle – but not too long, or soot would cling to it. Applying gentle pressure, the Swarovski crystal is finally placed on the red silk satin of the Paramour’s dress. Nina Fahrbach is a costume painter; for four days, she has already been working with Kaname Kiyono to give the dress that the Paramour wears in Hofmannsthal’s Jedermann the right sparkle. “It is almost meditative work,” says Nina Fahrbach while she heats stone by stone, placing them on the dress. Kaname Kiyono explains that there is no pattern. It is a matter of feeling which rhinestone goes where.

Cecilia Bartoli about “Romeo and Juliet”

( 26 May 2015 ) If Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet, was merely a distant, dream destination during my childhood, it was to become a very real place in my teenage years – when I performed one of my first roles – Alboino in Fioravanti’s Bertoldo, Bertoldino e Cacasenno. Unfortunately, the première was a complete disaster (including whistling, roaring, boos and stamping of feet) for all concerned. Such a disaster, in fact, that my boyfriend at the time – who had just arrived, his chest swollen with pride, from Rome – withdrew his affections from his devastated, unsuccessful little girlfriend on the spot. Whispering sweet nothings on Juliet’s balcony or hiding love letters in the cracks of mediaeval walls were therefore no longer the order of the day – I would have loved to give the faithless creature some drops of poison myself…! In other words, “vendetta alla romana” rather than the romance of Romeo and Juliet!

The most rigorous of these preached the complete suppression of desire, but most simply counseled restraint: in matters of love, be temperate; keep yourself under control; avoid recklessness. As the well-meaning friar in Romeo and Juliet advises the rash, love-sick young Romeo near the beginning of the play: “Love moderately.”

( 16 Apr 2015 ) “That’s the Way to Run a Festival!” was the headline of a major Austrian newspaper last year, on the occasion of the premiere of Salzburg’s Rosenkavalier, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst and directed by Harry Kupfer. Thus, there are many reasons to experience Der Rosenkavalier this year at the Großes Festspielhaus. One new element of the production, however, is the South African soprano Golda Schultz, and she alone is worth attending the revival.

Her current contract runs until the end of 2017, and in her last year she will share the running of the Salzburg Festival with the designated Artistic Director Markus Hinterhäuser, who begins his tenure in 2016/17. Until then, she will lead the Festival together with the Director of Drama, Sven-Eric Bechtolf, on an interim basis.

Grigory Sokolov chooses solo recital at the Salzburg Festival for his new live album

( 15 Jan 2015 ) International Release:
January 19, 2015 will see the worldwide release of Grigory Sokolov’s recital featuring works by Mozart and Chopin, which was recorded at the Salzburg Festival in 2008 and is being released by DGG as part of the SALZBURG FESTIVAL DOCUMENTS edition. It is the first concert the pianist has permitted to be published in more than 20 years, having signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon this past October.
