July 25 – August 31

A Stravinsky year for the Salzburg Festival: Sylvain Cambreling, the conductor most frequently heard during the Mortier era, takes on a new production of The Rake’s Progress together with director Peter Mussbach and painter Jörg Immendorff; Kent Nagano and Peter Sellars put on a scenic performance of Oedipus Rex combined with the Symphony of Psalms, and in a Festival tent erected in the yard of the Toskana Tract of the Residenz, Histoire d’un soldat is presented. “The Don Giovanni of the century” is how Gerard Mortier announces the new production of Mozart’s opera for which Patrice Chéreau is responsible – but audiences and critics are divided. Peter Stein completes the Shakespeare cycle with Anthony and Cleopatra – and extends his contract as director of drama for another three years. An agreement with the Vienna Philharmonic reached in February is also for three years. And on the personnel front, Helga Rabl-Stadler is appointed to the directorate; she is to succeed Heinrich Wiesmüller as President in January 1995. The so-called “Schüttkasten”, a former granary behind the Pferdeschwemme which the Festival had bought already in 1987, is completely renovated. Modern rehearsal spaces, the ticket office and the Salzburg Festival’s archive are to find a new home here.
