July 26 – August 31
Jedermann, seen through by Gernot Friedel after Ernst Haeusserman’s death, has competition on Cathedral Square this year: John Neumeier and his Hamburg Ballet make three guest appearances in Salzburg and dance Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, using the impressive façade of the cathedral as “sets”. Baroque sound also fills Kollegienkirche, the venue for Handel’s last oratorio Jephtha – the first time a full-length work by this composer is performed at the Festival. Lorin Maazel and Götz Friedrich are in charge of the world premiere of Luciano Berio’s Un re in ascolto, another coproduction with the Vienna State Opera like Cerha’s Baal. Riccardo Chailly makes his Salzburg opera conducting debut with Verdi’s Macbeth, Johannes Schaaf returns to Salzburg with a new production of Lessing’s Nathan. Karajan’s clash with the Berlin Philharmonic about the hiring of clarinetist Sabine Meyer escalates and ends in a deep rift: the orchestra’s tour to Salzburg, a program fixture since 1957, is suspended.
