Herbert von Karajan continued to expand his empire by founding his third festival in Salzburg, the Pentecost Concerts (Pfingstkonzerte). Another artist felt summoned to don the mantle of Max Reinhardt: Giorgio Strehler, in an opening address, honoured the Festival’s legendary co-founder on the first centenary of his birth. Strehler also caused a sensation with Spiel der Mächtigen, his adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry plays, which was performed on two evenings and strengthened his ambitions for a seat on the board of directors. Reinhardt’s legacy was lauded at every turn: Ernst Haeusserman reconstructed the original conception of Jedermann, which was now given in its old form with Curd Jürgens in the title role. Carl Orff’s final stage work, De temporum fine comoedia (“The Comedy of the End of Time’), received its world première in a staging by August Everding with Karajan himself presiding at the rostrum. And in yet another centenary Molière’s Misanthrope, in a staging by Rudolf Noelte, was performed in the Landestheater to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the great playwright’s birth.
