Salzburg mourned two artists whose work had left an indelible impression on the Festival for decades: the great conductor Bruno Walter died on 17 February, followed on 30 June by Caspar Neher. Neher’s final production, the set design and costumes for Gluck’s Iphigénie en Aulide, was mounted in the Felsenreitschule under the baton of Karl Böhm. Herbert von Karajan had his official position at the Festival redefined as “artistic consultant”. The uncontested high point of the summer was Verdi’s Trovatore, which Karajan conducted and staged in the Festspielhaus with Leontyne Price, Giulietta Simionato, Franco Corelli and Ettore Bastianini. The audience was in transports, and tickets were hawked on the black market at dizzying prices. Will Quadflieg introduced a new and permanent feature of the Festival programme: public readings of great literature, beginning in the summer with an evening of Rainer Maria Rilke.
