25 July – 31 August
This year the Festival celebrated the 175th anniversary of Mozart’s birth: five of his operas appeared on the programme, three of them in new productions. World premières having already been given in spoken theatre and instrumental music, it was now the ballet’s turn to present a première performance: Das jüngste Gericht ("Day of Judgement") by Felix Emmel. The Festival also broadened its international scope: the Budapest Philharmonic, conducted by Ernö von Dohnányi, became the first foreign orchestra to make a guest appearance. Radio broadcasts from Salzburg were now transmitted as far as America. Nor were young people ignored: children from the city’s Kai and St Peter districts presented their own Children’s Jedermann on Cathedral Square. On 3 September Franz Schalk passed away. Schalk was a co-founder of the Festival and conducted many of its early opera productions.
1931: Alexander Moissi appears as Jedermann for the last time (on the picture with Dagny Servaes as Buhlschaft).
