13–31 August
Once it became clear that a festival theatre could not be built in Hellbrunn, the plan arose of converting parts of the Court Stable Barracks into a stage. In the space of four months a temporary festival theatre was built on the grounds of the Winter Riding School. It opened with a performance of Das Salzburger große Welttheater. All the events of the season were now listed in a Festival almanac. Radio was employed for the first time with a live broadcast of Don Giovanni. Another novelty was a series of four lieder recitals, and three ballet evenings were given in visiting performances by the International Pantomime Society. The most important new figure in the summer festival was Bruno Walter, who conducted an orchestral concert and two performances of Don Pasquale at the Stadttheater.
