The Collegiate Church (Kollegienkirche) was obtained as a new venue for the Festival and used for the première of Hofmannsthal’s Das Salzburger grosse Welttheater ("The Great Salzburg Theatre of the World"). Opera was presented for the first time: four works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, performed at the City Theatre in stagings borrowed from the Vienna State Opera. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra celebrated its Festival début with two orchestral concerts in the Mozarteum. On 19 August the cornerstone was laid for a festival theatre in Hellbrunn, to be built according to plans drawn up by Hans Poelzig. In the event, the project eventually foundered on Austria’s runaway inflation. Alexander, Prince of Thurn and Taxis, resigned as president of the Festival and was replaced by Richard Strauss.
