Nestlé and the Salzburg Festival share an equal passion for quality. The constant striving for outstanding performance and a combination of tradition and innovation are the basis of our success. Every day, we offer people all over the world food of the highest quality. The Salzburg Festival, on the other hand, offers nourishment satisfying another need, as the Festival’s founder Max Reinhardt said so rightfully: “Art and culture are always akin to food – they are the other bread.”

Another area which is very important to both the Salzburg Festival and Nestlé is support for young people and young artists. Since the very beginning of our commitment to the Salzburg Festival in 1991, our activities have focused on this area.

With the “Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award”, a unique initiative throughout the world, we wish to discover young conductors from all over the world and contribute to their careers in a major way. The Award, which we presented for the first time in 2010, has given all its recipients so far – David Afkham from Germany (2010), Ainārs Rubiķis from Latvia (2011), Mirga Gražinyté-Tyla from Lithuania (2012), Ben Gernon from Great Britain (2013), Maxime Pascale from France (2014) and Lorenzo Viotti from Switzerland (2015) – a significant impulse for their young careers.

“Aren’t you afraid that the sponsors will try to influence your program?” is a common question in the arts sections of various newspapers, especially since we have been so successful in acquiring sponsors. And I can always answer both spontaneously and honestly: No, I am not afraid of that. Our sponsors are far too intelligent not to know that trying to influence the content of our program would have a boomerang effect. On the contrary, I hope our sponsors continue to influence us, in the sense that they make it possible to implement projects that we could not realize otherwise for lack of money. Therefore, on behalf of the Festival, I would very much like to thank our sponsors, donors, supporters and friends as well as the public authorities subsidizing the Festival for their generous support.
