Due to high demand, the Salzburg Festival will double the number of its youth subscriptions in 2017. Altogether, 6,000 tickets for operas, dramas and concerts will be reserved for young people up to the age of 26 (i.e. born after June 30, 1990) with discounts of up to 90%. This is made possible by generous support from the Festival’s Project Sponsor L’Occitane.

Young subscribers will have the opportunity to experience the following operas: from Monteverdi’s semi-staged opera Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria under John Eliot Gardiner to Handel’s Ariodante with world star Cecilia Bartoli, Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia in concert with Krassimira Stoyanova and Juan Diego Flórez, all the way to key works of the 20th century – Dmitri Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, Alban Berg’s Wozzeck and Aribert Reimann’s Lear.

In the drama department, there are tickets for the works of the two Nobel Prize winners Gerhart Hauptmann and Harold Pinter, as well as plays by Frank Wedekind and Ödon von Horváth. Offers for the younger audience members also include the reading of Arthur Schnitzler’s texts, the marathon reading of Robert Musil’s Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften and a concert performance based on texts by William Shakespeare.

The concert programme offers interested young listeners the chance to hear the best orchestras from all over the world. First and foremost the Vienna Philharmonic, which celebrates its 175th anniversary this year, but also the Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Kent Nagano, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra with Anne-Sophie Mutter as the soloist, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra under Daniel Barenboim, MusicAeterna under Teodor Currentzis, the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, Camerata Salzburg and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg – not to forget the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under Ingo Metzmacher.

This “Who is Who” of pianists, singers and instrumentalists can be attended by young people in various subscription combinations, most of them featuring three performances. Featured artists include Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, Ilya Gringolts, Matthias Goerne, Evgeny Kissin, Igor Levit, Maurizio Pollini, Fazil Say, Andras Schiff, Grigory Sokolov, Christian Tetzlaff, Daniil Trifonov and Sonya Yoncheva, to name just a few…
