After his celebrated productions of Saint François d’Assise (1992 and 1998) and L’Amour de loin (2000), the renowned Mozart specialist Peter Sellars returns to the Salzburg Festival, directing Mozart’s opera of reconciliation, La clemenza di Tito.
Mozart was commissioned in 1789 to write the opera, occasioned by the coronation of Leopold II. The work may be considered the great testament of Salzburg’s resident genius, for it reaches far beyond the historical context, attempting to give us no less than a vision of peaceful coexistence.
Peter Sellars and the conductor Teodor Currentzis expand upon the story of the goodness and clemency of the Roman ruler Titus for their Salzburg production, reworking it yet again and extending the “true opera’s” perspective, in keeping with Mozart’s intentions. “How do we live together in an age of conflict?” the director asks. “How do you offer some healing gesture at a time when people are so angry?” Mozart’s last opera is a great work about truth and reconciliation, as Peter Sellars explains.

La clemenza di Tito premieres on 27 July 2017 at the Felsenreitschule.
