( 25 Apr 2013 ) The leitmotif “Sacrifice” is the overarching motto of the 2013 Whitsun Festival. Etymologically, the German word Opfer, or sacrifice, is derived from the Latin offerre, which is also the root of Offertorium – the moment during mass when wine and bread, symbols of Christ’s sacrifice, are brought to the altar. The themes of redemption and hope, of sacrifice and the sacrificed have inspired great artists to create innumerable musical works. Now the Whitsun Festival brings together some of these great works on stage.

( 25 May 2012 ) At a press conference, Artistic Director Alexander Pereira presented the program for the next Whitsun Festival in 2013. The overarching theme for the coming year is the topic of “sacrifice”. Cecilia Bartoli, the Artistic Director of the Whitsun Festival, is especially interested in the ambiguity which becomes apparent when one translates the German term Opfer: “Thus, in English, it means both ‘sacrifice’ and ‘victim’. But in fact and truth, isn’t the difference in most cases a matter of perspective? After all, there can be no sacrifice without someone or something being sacrificed, without an offering – the question is only on which side one finds oneself.” (Cecilia Bartoli)
