Sometimes it comes as a repressive force, sometimes it brings emancipation. While in dramatic texts, it often leads to the apotheosis of the hero and heroine, it can just as easily let them fall into an abyss. In all cases, however, our attention is drawn to the fact that something has disturbed the ordinary course of events.

We have set out to rethink and develop further the great ideas of our founding fathers Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Max Reinhardt.

Altogether, 46 opera
performances were on the programme: three new productions, two revivals, one restaging,
one revival from the Salzburg Whitsun Festival and three concert performances
formed the 2016 opera offerings.
Compared to last
summer, 12,000 opera tickets more were on sale – a record topped only during
the Mozart Year 2006.

spirituelle opened the Festival, exploring Eastern Christianity in
2016. Five sold-out concerts offered a portrayal of this highly diverse vocal

Festival
President Helga Rabl-Stadler received a medal of the Republic of Italy today.
She received the “Grande Ufficiale dell’ordine della Stella d’Italia” in the
presence of Maestro Riccardo Muti after his concert with the Vienna
Philharmonic. The medal was presented by the Ambassador of the Republic of
Italy in Vienna, H. E. Giorgio Marrapodi.
