Hemalatha Rangarajan
Hailing from a family of musicians and the daughter of reputed percussionist, Vidhwan K. S. Rangachary, Dr Hemalatha Rangarajan is one of the most sought after violin accompanists in the field of Carnatic music today. She has trained as a violinist from the age of 8, initially with Sri K. Shivaraman and later, under Shri. T. S. Narayana Rao. An A grade artist of the All India Radio, Dr Hemalatha also holds an M.A. in Indian Music (1994), an M.Phil. (1996) and a Ph.D. (2002) from the University of Madras. In her distinguished career of over 25 years, besides her solo concerts, she has accompanied almost all the most eminent South Indian musicians in concert, both solo and ensemble. She has performed widely in the US, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, UAE and South Africa. Dr Hemalatha is a recipient of numerous awards, amongst which are the ‘Best Violinist’ awards from the prestigious Music Academy Madras for the years 1994, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2005 and 2006, from the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in 1993 and The Indian Fine Arts Society in 1995. Dr Hemalatha is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Indian Music at the University of Madras.
