Liam Steel

Liam Steel’s credits as a director include Merlin at the Nuffield Theatre and the Theatre Royal in Northampton; Albert Herring and Orphée aux enfers at the Royal College of Music; Peter Pan and The Tempest at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre; Paul Bunyan (Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera), Die Zauberflöte, Gianni Schicchi and L’infedeltà delusa for English Touring Opera; The Jungle Book at West Yorkshire Playhouse; Le nozze di Figaro at Opera Holland Park; Tom’s Midnight Garden (TMA Award for Best Production for Children and Young People) and Oliver Twist at the Library Theatre in Manchester; Absolute Beginners at the Lyric Hammersmith; Vurt at the Contact Theatre in Manchester; Hymns for Frantic Assembly at the Lyric Hammersmith; Heavenly for Frantic Assembly at the Soho Theatre and at 59E59 in New York; The Singing Circle at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Knots (Best Production at the Dublin International Theatre Festival, Scotsman Fringe First Award and Total Theatre Award) for CoisCeim Dance Theatre; and Babel, Revelations, Off the Wall, Skylon Spirits and Sinner (Canadian Dora Award for Best Choreography and GLAAD Media Award for Most Outstanding New York Theatre Off-Broadway) for Stan Won’t Dance, of which he was artistic director.
As a co-director and choreographer, Liam Steel’s work includes Lord of the Flies and Into the Woods (Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival) at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Barnum at Chichester Festival Theatre and Into the Woods at the Delacorte Theater in New York.
His credits as a choreographer and movement director include The War of the Worlds in the West End; Dara, The Magistrate and Sparkleshark at the National Theatre; The Infidel at Theatre Royal Stratford East; Porgy and Bess, Romeo and Juliet and The Crucible at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre; The Taming of the Shrew and Pericles at the Royal Shakespeare Company; Ghost: the Musical at the Manchester Opera House, in the West End, on Broadway and on tour in Korea, China, Australia, the UK and the USA; Ben Hur Live at the O2 in London and on an international tour; Imagine This in the West End; Paradise Lost for Headlong at the Theatre Royal in Northampton; Strictly Dandia (Herald Angel Award for Outstanding Choreographic Achievement) for Tamasha Theatre Company; The Count of Monte Cristo at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester; and The Secret Garden, Beauty and the Beast and The Ghosts of Scrooge at the Library Theatre in Manchester.
Liam Steel was responsible for all of the musical staging and choreography for director Tom Hooper’s film of Les Misérables.
