The Greek god Dionysus invites you to the party highlight of the year. Even though attendance is forbidden by King Pentheus, we dance and make merry the whole night. When it is much too late, we recognize Dionysus’s true face. Only the music hints that this revelry ends with a gruesome murder.
Hans Werner Henze’s score for The Bassarids calls for a large orchestra, two choruses, a stage band and vocal soloists to mount this lavish festive gathering, which Henze brings to life with a fascinating musical language. Many tasks await us — and perhaps a quite different fate once this wild night of partying draws to an end.
