Shakespeare in Love is a romantic comedy about the (fictitious) story of how William Shakespeare wrote his immortal love tragedy, and at the same time a brilliant costume satire of life in the theatre. Featuring an excellent cast, impressive acting and imaginative directing, Shakespeare in Love is compelling in its ironic and witty dialogues and was honoured with seven Oscar Awards.
The 2016 Salzburg Whitsun Festival is dedicated to Romeo and Juliet, and thus the traditional cooperation with DAS KINO features a selection of the many film versions of Shakespeare’s drama. These include the version Franco Zeffirelli shot on the original locations in Verona, in which the director cast the pair of lovers with Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey – making him the daring first to use youthful actors for the roles. The film with music by Nino Rota was released in 1968 and became world-famous.
Furthermore, the selection includes William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet by Baz Luhrmann of 1996, in which Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes play the title roles. “Mixing set pieces from current action cinema, pop music culture, a significant dose of religious kitsch and the 400-year-old original text, the result is a dazzling version of Shakespeare’s love tragedy for the MTV generation, challenging the audience’s cognitive capabilities with its overabundance of ideas,” wrote the Dictionary of International Film. One of the special features of this modern film version of the play with its video-clip aesthetic is that the dialogues are spoken in verse, as they are in Shakespeare’s drama.
Finally, the director John Madden intriguingly mixes the story of Romeo and Juliet with William Shakespeare’s biography in his movie entitled Shakespeare in Love, winner of no less than seven Oscars. Set in 16th-century London, this witty comedy also contains many an ironic stab at the film industry of our time.
