Andrei Tarkowski • The Sacrifice

in cooperation with Salzburger Filmkulturzentrum DAS KINO and Svenska Filminstitutet

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

Continuing our cooperation with DAS KINO in 2013, we revisit Andrei Tarkovsky’s award-winning film Offret (The Sacrifice, 1986), an event realised with the support of the Swedish Film Institute. The film magazine Der Filmdienst called this work “a poetic vision, compelling in word and image, counteracting the world’s materialism with its demand for a willingness to sacrifice, with a counter-world of faith filled by a spiritual search for meaning. In images of great beauty and mysterious symbolism, a poetical film language and philosophical-religious discourse are combined.”

In his last film, shot shortly before his death and intended as homage to Ingmar Bergman, Tarkovsky de-scribes how on his birthday, a man tries to make a deal with God to save the world from nuclear destruction by forfeiting what he loves most – his wife and children, his home and language. One of the film’s musical leitmotifs is the aria “Erbarme Dich” from Bach’s St. Matthew Passion.

Showings: Friday May 17 (8:30 p.m.), Saturday May18 (3:00 p.m.), Sunday May 19 (11:00 a.m.) at DAS KINO.
