The Requiem in C minor, composed by Luigi Cherubini in 1816 for a church service in remembrance of the execution of Louis XVI, is a highlight in the history of church music. Far from pure formality, in the work Cherubini combines his masterful command of polyphonic compositional technique with a sensitive interpretation of the text and great intensity of expression. Yet Cherubini does not include any solo voices. Beethoven was among the composers who greatly admired the Requiem in C minor and it was also played at his funeral service.
