Alvis Hermanis, one of the most renowned theater
directors in Europe, winner of the 2003 Montblanc
Young Directors Award at the Salzburg Festival with
his staging of Gogol's Government Inspector, is
back in Salzburg with his extraordinary ensemble
of actors from the New Riga Theater and a poetic
show without words, full of stories, music and
minute observations. In the internationally acclaimed
production Long Life, he had already
depicted the tragic-comic life in an old people's flatshare
in Riga; we now meet these same inhabitants
during their youth in The Sound of Silence – at
a time when, at the margins of Europe, they were
caught by the utopias of the 1968 generation; at a
time of confidence and melancholy as expressed in
the songs of Simon & Garfunkel. The Sound of
Silence is in its own way an answer to the game of
the mighty: it reminds us of happiness, without any
embellishments.
