Giovanni Paisiello studied at the Conservatorio S. Onofrio in Naples where he celebrated his first great success in 1766 with the Vedova di bel genio. In St. Petersburg, Warsaw, Vienna and Paris, and later again in Naples he composed over a hundred operas, including La serva padrona and Il barbiere di Siviglia.
In Il matrimonio inaspettato, an opera buffa, Paisiello plays with a popular theme. Giorgino loves the peasant-girl Vespina but Giorgino's father, a rich farmer and newly appointed Marquis Tulipano, has decided on a different wife for his son: Contessa di Sarzana from a traditional noble family. Many turbulent entanglements ensue until an unexpected turn of events brings about the solution. The widowed Marquis Tulipano is reconciled with Contessa Sarzana and asks her to marry him.
