PROGRAMME

The vague hope of sharing the fame of the Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi prompted his long-stand­ing assistant Vieri Tosatti to make the following statement, not long after Scelsi’s funeral. “Giacinto Scelsi – that’s me!” Tosatti, who was also a com­­poser, did indeed play an important role in the very complicated process of writing down music according to Scelsi’s improvisations recorded on tape. Nevertheless, the assertion that he was Scelsi’s artistic ghost-writer fades away with an almost inaudible echo in the fermentation room of un­proven facts. Yet it is precisely this location that becomes the scene of discussion about musical copyright in the production Sauser aus Italien (New Wine from Italy). Christoph Marthaler, his actors and the musicians of the Klangforum Wien investigate the question to what extent Scelsi’s artistic authorship is indeed in danger of being lost in the various layers of improvisation, composition and reincarnation. They arrive at the conclusion that in music history the link between notation and wine-tasting is clearly underestimated.
